Lesson Plan
Class: Spanish Grade: 9-12
Objectives
Students activities:
1.Research the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead
2. Present important facts about the holiday to the class.
3. Create an Altar dedicated to the person they choose
Resources
Students will need the following:
•Internet access (computer lab).
•Resources about Mexico and its holidays and traditions
•Materials for students to make an altar.
Activities
1. Teacher will Ask students if they know what do Mexican celebrate on November 1st and 2nd. Now ask students to discuss the importance of the holiday. Discuss the values or beliefs of this holiday. Ask students if there is a celebration like that in the USA. Discuss the importance and the values and beliefs.
2. Tell students that they are going to study and research about the Mexican Holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) . They should include the research of Jose Guadalupe Posada the creator of the skeleton pictures for Dia de los muertos.
3. Divide the class in groups of four.. Students within each group should research the basic facts about the holiday and then to study a unique aspect of that holiday, such as dates, rituals, food, costumes, dance, music, or images. Provide the groups with the following Web sites:

Guidance:
4. To help their research students should answer these questions:
6. Students will bring three visual aids for the presentation, besides the altar they have to make a presentation using software tools like: wordle, tagxedo, animoto, a digital story, or Power Point. To reinforce their learning they can bring the food, music, arts and crafts, dress, etc. They should provide basic facts about the holiday they studied and researched.
7. After the presentations, have the students to discuss the Day of the Dead celebration. What did they learn? What beliefs or values does each holiday reflect in each different country?
Discussion Topics
1. What are the characteristics of this Mexican holiday. What did you learn about it?
2. What are the characteristics of this celebration in other countries around the world? Compare and contrast among themselves
3. Compare and contrasts it with Halloween in the United States. How are the two similar/different?
