In México for The Day Of The Dead besides celebrating by cooking special dishes and building altars, they also remember their love ones who passed away by visiting them in the cemetery. This is a custom that is practiced in the northern states of México, and it is done instead of building altars.
Early in the morning people visit the tombstones of their departed. At the entrance of the cemeteries there are all kinds of vendors; flowers, food, sugar canes, candies, and more.
Inside the graveyard it looks like a huge party. People cleaning the headstones, placing the flowers and water around the gravestone. Praying a rosary. Mariachis singing. Music from a stereo. Somebody just playing a guitar and singing the favorites songs for his perished. It takes all morning/afternoon and is an activity in which all family participates.
